Can I use my counselling notes in court or legal proceedings?
Our counselling service is therapeutic, not forensic. We do not provide reports for court proceedings, custody disputes, or legal evidence. Counselling notes are not written for legal purposes and may not meet the requirements of courts or statutory bodies. Our focus is entirely on your personal healing and psychological safety.
For more detail, please see our Policy on Clinical Records and Legal Requests.(https://www.theechosociety.org.uk/policy-clinical-records-legal-requests)
Can you give me legal advice or help with court letters?
We provide therapeutic support and psychoeducation to help you understand and recover from narcissistic abuse and coercive control. However, we do not provide legal advice, and our counsellors cannot act as expert witnesses or offer formal assessments for DWP, housing, or legal proceedings. If you need documentation for legal, housing, or benefit‑related matters, we recommend seeking support from a specialist legal or advocacy service. You’ll find a list of trusted organisations on our Useful Contacts page.(https://www.theechosociety.org.uk/useful-contacts)
Please note that our counsellors cannot sign fit notes or provide medical evidence for work, benefits, or statutory assessments. These must be requested from your GP or another medical professional.
You can also read our full Policy on Clinical Records and Legal Requests (https://www.theechosociety.org.uk/policy-clinical-records-legal-requests)for more information.
Can I request a letter to confirm I'm attending counselling?
In some cases, your counsellor may be able to provide a brief attendance letter confirming your engagement with the service. This confirms dates/attendance only — no opinions, diagnoses, or clinical content. This is not a clinical report or assessment. Please speak with your counsellor if you need this, and we’ll do our best to support you within our scope.
