   Safety, Privacy & Confidentiality

A calm, steady, and transparent overview of how we protect your wellbeing and information

1. Our Commitment to Your Safety and Privacy

Seeking support after experiences of narcissistic abuse, coercive control, or relational trauma can feel significant. We understand the courage it takes to reach out, and we aim to offer a space that feels steady, respectful, and emotionally safe from your very first contact.

We prioritise your safety, privacy, autonomy, and pace — and your sense of control throughout the process.

Our approach is designed to counteract the dynamics of intrusion, unpredictability, and boundary violations that often accompany abusive relationships.

2. How We Work

Our approach is grounded in trauma‑informed practice and informed by an understanding of narcissistic abuse and coercive control.

We work in a way that prioritises:

  • Understanding your experience — listening with care and validating your story

  • A non‑judgemental environment — offering space without pressure, blame, or scepticism

  • Respect for your autonomy — you choose what to share and the pace of the work

  • Consistency and predictability — creating a stable foundation for therapeutic progress

3. Confidentiality & How Your Information Is Protected

Confidentiality is a central part of therapeutic work. Everything you share with your counsellor is treated with care and handled in line with professional, ethical, and legal standards.

How We Protect Your Privacy

Your personal data and clinical notes are stored securely and handled in line with UK GDPR, using secure systems and processes designed to protect against unauthorised access.

Limits to Confidentiality

There are rare situations where we may be required to share information. These include:

  • serious and immediate risk of harm to yourself or others

  • safeguarding concerns involving a vulnerable adult

  • legal obligations such as a valid court order

Where possible, we will discuss this with you beforehand and approach the situation with transparency and care.

Supervision

Counsellors receive regular professional supervision to support safe and ethical practice. Any material discussed is handled confidentially, with identifying details minimised and shared only in line with professional standards.

4. Human‑Led Therapeutic Work

Counselling at The Echo Society is delivered by trained human practitioners. We do not use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to replace or interpret the therapeutic relationship.

If you use AI tools in your personal life — for example, to organise thoughts or reflect on experiences — you are welcome to discuss this with your counsellor. Together, you can explore how to ensure your therapeutic space remains private, grounded, and supportive of your process.

5. Clinical Suitability & Safeguarding

We want to ensure that everyone who comes to us receives support that is safe, ethical, and appropriate for their needs.

Our service is designed for adults who are not in active crisis and who are able to engage in regular therapeutic work — full details are outlined in our Client Agreement.

If your needs would be better supported by NHS or multi‑disciplinary mental health services, we may recommend pausing therapy or signposting you to alternative services. Where this is the case, we will always offer thoughtful signposting to appropriate support.

This approach helps ensure that every person receives support that is safe and sustainable.

6. Supporting Your Safety in Practical Ways

We recognise that seeking support can sometimes involve safety considerations, especially if you are still in or leaving an abusive situation.

Collaborative safety planning

We can work with you to explore personalised safety strategies that help you navigate risk in ways that feel manageable and grounded.

Digital security guidance

If you access our service online, we can offer guidance on strengthening your digital privacy — including email safety, device security, and managing your online footprint.

Discreet communication

We can adapt how we communicate with you to support your privacy. This may include:

  • avoiding voicemail

  • using neutral email subject lines

  • agreeing on safe times to contact you

These adjustments can be discussed at any stage.

7. If You Have Questions

If you have any questions about our approach to safety, privacy, or confidentiality, you are welcome to contact us at any time. We’re here to support you in a way that feels steady, respectful, and grounded.

We aim to offer a consistent, respectful, and grounded therapeutic space at your pace.
