Editorial Standards & Content Development

Echo believes people deserve to understand how the information, resources, and other published content on our website are developed, reviewed, and maintained. This page explains the principles that guide our editorial approach, how different types of content are prepared for publication, and the role that human review and digital tools play within that process.

Our aim is to ensure the information and resources we publish are thoughtful, accessible, trauma‑informed, and responsibly developed.

Our purpose

Echo publishes educational, informational, and community content designed to support people navigating narcissistic abuse, coercive control, relational harm, and other complex relational dynamics. These materials are designed to offer clarity, grounding, and compassionate understanding — especially for people who may feel overwhelmed or unsure where to begin.

Our published content serves different purposes depending on its nature. Some content is educational or informational, while other content shares lived experience, introduces services or professionals, explains organisational policies, or supports community participation.

They are not therapy, legal advice, or crisis support.

They are intended to complement, rather than replace, professional support where appropriate.

Where content discusses complex or evolving topics, it reflects Echo’s understanding at the time of publication and may be updated as our knowledge and practice develop.

Our editorial principles

All content published by Echo is prepared, reviewed, or presented in line with the following editorial principles, recognising that the way content is created may vary depending on its purpose and origin.

  • Trauma‑informed — where appropriate, written, edited, and presented with care for emotional pacing, emotional accessibility, and psychological safety.

  • Human‑led — shaped through human editorial judgement, review, and organisational oversight.

  • Relationally grounded — focused on patterns, dynamics, and lived experience.

  • Clear and accessible — using plain language and thoughtful structure.

  • Respectful and non‑pathologising — avoiding labels, judgement, or diagnostic assumptions.

  • Open to review and improvement — recognising that learning and practice evolve.

Although the way content is created may differ depending on its purpose, all published material is reviewed through an editorial process that reflects Echo’s values, professional responsibilities, and commitment to respectful, trauma‑informed communication.

Types of content we publish

Echo publishes a range of different types of content, each of which follows an editorial process appropriate to its purpose.

This may include:

  • Educational resources researched, written, and maintained by Echo.

  • Lived‑experience contributions shared with permission and, where appropriate, edited for clarity, confidentiality, safeguarding, or accessibility.

  • Testimonials submitted by people who have used our services and published only with their explicit consent. Identifying details may be removed or amended to help protect privacy and safety.

  • Community submissions, which may include anonymous contributions, creative projects, or other forms of community participation. Where appropriate, Echo may curate, edit, or provide accompanying reflections or contextual information to support clarity, accessibility, and consistency.

  • Collaborative content developed with authors, researchers, artists, or partner organisations. Echo reviews collaborative material for clarity, accessibility, presentation, and alignment with our values before publication, while respecting the contributor's expertise, authorship, or creative work. Unless otherwise stated, the views expressed remain those of the contributor.

  • Professional profiles — provided by counsellors, psychotherapists, and clinical supervisors. Where appropriate, Echo may make editorial amendments for clarity, accessibility, consistency, confidentiality, safeguarding, or presentation before publication, while preserving the accuracy and intended meaning of the contributor’s professional information.

  • Organisational information, including policies, procedures, and service information developed and maintained by Echo.

Regardless of the type of content, Echo reviews all material before publication and remains responsible for how it is presented.

Our editorial review is intended to help ensure published content is, where appropriate, accurate, clearly presented, respectful, accessible, and aligned with Echo’s values and safeguarding responsibilities.

How our content is developed

Echo’s published content is developed through a human‑led editorial process. The precise process varies depending on the type of content being published, but typically includes:

  1. Identifying topics that reflect Echo’s purpose and the needs of the people we support.

  2. Defining the purpose, audience, tone, and scope of each piece of content.

  3. Developing and refining content through human writing, research, and — where appropriate — digital tools.

  4. Reviewing content, where appropriate, for accuracy, clarity, accessibility, tone, editorial consistency, confidentiality, safeguarding considerations, and alignment with Echo’s trauma‑informed approach.

  5. Approving all content through human editorial oversight before publication.

While our editorial process may evolve over time, Echo remains responsible for all content we publish.

Trauma‑informed writing

We aim to write in ways that feel calm, respectful, and emotionally accessible.

Where appropriate, this includes:

  • gentle pacing

  • plain language

  • non‑directive wording

  • thoughtful structure

  • grounding transitions

  • sensitivity to overwhelm and emotional activation

Accessibility

We work to make our resources as accessible as reasonably possible by using:

  • clear language

  • consistent structure

  • readable formatting

  • mobile‑friendly layouts

  • attention to emotional as well as practical accessibility

Accessibility is an ongoing process, and we continue to review and improve our resources over time.

We recognise that accessibility is shaped not only by the needs of the people who use our resources, but also by the ways they are created. Our editorial approach is designed to support different ways of thinking, processing, communicating, and creating, helping us develop resources that are clear, thoughtfully structured, and accessible to a wide range of readers.

Human oversight and use of digital tools

Echo sometimes uses a range of digital tools, including accessibility and assistive technologies and, where appropriate, AI, to assist with aspects of developing, reviewing, or preparing content for publication.

These tools may help with tasks such as organising ideas, improving readability, refining wording, supporting accessibility, and preparing content for publication, where appropriate.

Digital tools are one part of our editorial process and are used alongside human writing, reflection, review, and professional judgement.

Digital tools do not replace human editorial judgement or organisational oversight.

All content published by Echo is reviewed through an editorial process appropriate to its purpose before publication, whether it is created by Echo, contributed by others, developed collaboratively, or submitted by professionals.

Reviewing and updating our content

We periodically review the information, resources, and other content we publish and may revise them to improve clarity and accessibility, reflect developments in our understanding and practice, or maintain accuracy and relevance over time.

This page reflects Echo’s editorial approach at the time of publication and may be updated as our practices continue to develop.

We value thoughtful feedback because it helps us continue improving the information, resources, and other content we publish.

We welcome thoughtful questions and constructive feedback as part of our commitment to transparency, continual learning, and ongoing improvement.
